Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a condition with a tendency to have repeated seizures. There can be varied symptoms ranging from jerking of limbs, tightness in limbs, posturing, confusion episodes, unresponsiveness or a vacant stare. Some can have behavioural problems also. Proper evaluation followed by regular treatment with antiepileptic medications helps in having a good quality of life.

Symptoms of Epilepsy :

  • Uncontrollable jerking movements
  • Tingling in your arms & legs
  • Stiff muscles
  • Loss of consciousness 
  • Temporary confusion
  • Psychological problems 
  • A staring spell

Causes of Epilepsy :

Epilepsy can be caused by brain infections, major injury to head or can sometimes happen after a stroke or secondary to brain tumor. Some genetic epilepsies are also known in which brain imaging is normal. Cortical malformations are also an important cause of epilepsy. The identification of cause is possible in only very few cases of epilepsy.

Treatment of Epilepsy :

Medications are the initial treatment for epilepsy patients ,but in some patients in whom seizures are not controlled with medications, surgery may be necessary. Some other potential therapies like vagus nerve stimulation and deep brain stimulation are also used alternatively in a few patients.
